Castle Park opened in June 1994, initially as a nine hole golf facility. Such was the local interest that 250 members were in place from it's inception and member numbers are increasing annually.
The original nine holes were roughly laid out by a team of four enthusiastic golfers from Gullane, who between them had golfed in practically every corner of the world and whose only ambition left was to design a golf course. Led by Archie Baird, a renowned golf historian, Colin Brough, a retired doctor, Hope Letters of golf equipment fame and Alistair Millar, well known local farmer and past captain of Gullane Golf Club they walked the area mapping the direction of each hole.
This rough plan was then brought to fruition by the owner Stuart Fortune plus Alastair Patterson and his team who designed the greens, positioned the bunkers / tees and generally built the nine holes (now the back 9).
The intention was to build a course which would readily convert to 18 holes and to make full use of the superb ground available with stunning local views.
Castle Park has been described as the Gleneagles of East Lothian, so it can be assumed that the design and construction teams can feel justly proud.
The course is built on free draining fertile farmland with most of it bordering the mature woodlands of Yester Estate. The historic Yester Castle overlooking the 14th green was last occupied in the early 18th century and is now a ruin. The course is naturally undulating in character and a number of pine plantations have been planted to break up the fairways and punish anyone straying offline. Water features were designed to attract errant tee shots at the 1st and 12th and a number of blind holes on the back nine make for an exciting and adventurous game.
One of the objectives from day one at Castle Park was to establish a facility, combined with the friendliness of the staff, which people would enjoy visiting not just once but time and time again. We think we have achieved that objective and hope you will agree.
Enjoy your visit to Castle Park.
