Dear Member,
A Happy New Year to you all and welcome to the first message of 2012. I hope you’re looking forward to the forthcoming season at Castle Park.
I would like to welcome Carolyn Gemmell, Hazel Bryson-Chalmers and Paul Knight to the club committee. Details of all the committee members are included on the back of the fixture list distributed to all members. These are now at the clubhouse and available to you on payment of your £20 club subscription.
The notes of the AGM are up in the clubhouse and a follow-up to any action points will be included in the next committee notes which will be posted soon.
In response to the points raised the following actions have been agreed:
The club has purchased 6 new ball cleaners and these will be installed around the course shortly.
The club is also purchasing a new computer and screen for inputting the competition scores and maintaining handicaps. After 10 years of faithful service the current computer is coming to the end of its days.
Craig Wilson is investigating installing a high pressure air line for cleaning golf shoes etc.
Carolyn and Hazel are developing a short questionnaire for members to put forward their views on the format of annual presentation dance. I would ask you take the opportunity to express your views.
The club will be organising a Junior Open competition to take place in the school holiday period. There will also be an Open Texas Scramble scheduled for Saturday 11th August.
Paul Knight is busy organising coaching for the juniors. Please contact Paul directly if you have kids interested in joining the club and/or you are interested in participating in ClubGolf coaching and helping to develop the junior game in Scotland. See the ClubGolf web site for more information on the ClubGolf initiative - http://www.clubgolfscotland-youth.co.uk - which Castle Park supports.
Craig and Jim Wilson are looking at the options for the drainage issues on the 11th green. As you can imagine, lifting a green is no small job and very expensive. I would ask you to be patient while the most effective options are scoped.
Finally, I would like to welcome any new members to Castle Park.
I look forward to seeing you at the clubhouse and on the golf course.
Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions or points
you would like to raise.
Regards
Clark Black
Club Captain
Dear Member,
The Castle Park Golf Club AGM took place at Gifford Town Hall
on Wednesday 7th December 2011. I would like to thank the members who braved
the chilly weather to come along to the meeting and voice their opinions
on the running of the club.
My thanks go to Paul Huish, Alan Herkes and Sheila Herschel for all their
hard work over the years as they step down from their positions on the committee.
Congratulations to Margaret Ross on becoming Ladies Captain, Lynn Moodie
on becoming Ladies Vice Captain, Paul Knight on becoming Junior Organiser
and Hazel Bryson-Chalmers/Carolyn Gemmell on becoming joint Social Organisers.
The notes from the AGM will become available shortly and I will email out
a copy of them to you, post a copy on the club noticeboard and add the main
topics to the website. The main topics of discussion were unsurprisingly
the clubhouse plans, the course and the annual presentation night. The committee
will be seeking your views on how we can increase the numbers attending
the presentation evening next year.
I'm pleased to say that our club funds are in a good position and we are
keeping the club fee at £20 for adults and £5 for juniors for the 2012 season.
Please note that the Club levy is NOT included in the membership fee you
pay to LFC Castle Park Golf and must be paid separately to Castle Park Golf
Club. This is because our club is slightly unusual in that the owner of
the golf course (to whom your annual membership is paid) is different to
the Club which is run by the Committee. The Club Committee at Castle Park
run the various competitions and maintain members' handicaps.
The Club levy of £20 per adult and £5 per child funds the SGU, SLGA and
Lothian’s Golf Association levies that the Club is obliged to pay for all
playing members and also goes towards the funding of the Club newsletters,
fixture cards, maintenance of the handicapping system and other Club activities
including the computer system used for the competitions.
The Club is obliged to pay the SGU, SLGA and Lothian’s Golf Association
levies across to the relevant bodies in January, therefore we ask for payment
of the Club levy no later than 1 February 2012. Failure to pay the Club
levy for the 2012 season will mean that you will not be eligible to enter
Club competitions and will not have your handicap maintained by the Handicap
Committee.
I hope this explains the difference between your membership fee and the
club levy but please email me clarkblack2412 (at) hotmail (dot) com if you
have any further questions.
I look forward to the weather improving and seeing you on the course.
Regards
Clark Black

Message from Captain
Dear Member,
We are well and truly into the golf season now although the weather seems
to doubt that.
The final championship qualifying medal took place at the weekend in horrible
conditions but still had impressive scoring from Peter Fenn and Alan Muirhead.
Congratulations to all that have qualified for the knock out stages of
the A's, B's, C's, Ladies and Juniors. The medal was also the Stuart Fortune
Memorial Medal and I'm pleased to say that the club raised £630
to support our junior coaching program over the next few seasons. Thank
you to all that took part in the raffle and well done to Derek Frame on
winning the Odyssey Putter.
The golf course is looking really good and the verti-cutting of the greens
last week has got them fast and true, please remember to repair all pitchmarks
on the greens.
I'd like to highlight a few up and coming events over the summer for your
diaries. The Texas Scramble and April Fool events were so well attended
and received by members that we are including two other 'fun' events this
year in place of sweep competitions.
- Open Mixed Foursomes on Saturday 4th June
- 3 clubs and a putter challenge on 25th June
- Gents Seniors Open on Tuesday 12th July
- Club Championship Finals Day on Saturday 30th July
- Texas Scramble on 15th October
Finally can I remind all members to enter their score in the computer
after a medal or sweep competition. Even if you have had a justifiable
reason to NR, your card must be entered as not entering it has an impact
on the standard scratch of the competition and an effect on other members
handicaps.
Good luck to all playing ties in the next few weeks and lets hope the
wind takes a rest for a while.
Regards
Clark Black

Results from last Sunday's Medal unlikely to be posted on here until early
next week.
Ricky has work commitments during the first part of this week and i'm
attending the remaining dates of The Stranglers tour (to compare balding
heads!!) in the second part of the week.
I think Dennis Clifford won gents with 47 points (yes 47 not a typo!)
and Jenny Sewell won ladies with 37 points.
The results are up at the clubhouse.
The Winter Eclectic is up to date on the website.
Dear Member,
I hope your dusting off your clubs, replacing your golf shoe spikes and hitting the gym for the new season. Okay, dusting off your clubs will do!
Although the weather has been far from kind to us, I'm encouraged to see so many of you attending the medals and putting your names in for the summer competitions. The increase to the medal numbers is fantastic and it's good to see so many of the new members competing. The response to the forthcoming April Fool and Texas Scramble has been fantastic and next year I will look at how both these competitions can accommodate more players. The committee have been so impressed by the response to the Texas Scramble that we have decided to hold another one near the end of the year, replacing one of the sweep medals, details will follow on that.
Work continues on the course to get it ready for the season and the green keepers will be carrying out fertilisation and coring the greens shortly. I would remind all of you to repair your pitchmarks and any others you see on the greens. The course is very soft just now and the pitchmarks have been very noticeable lately.
A reminder that the 1st championship qualifier medal will take place on the 9th April. There are 3 championship qualifying medals but only your best two scores go forward for you to qualify for the A, B, C, Ladies & Junior clun championship matchplay. The finals day is Saturday 30th July this year and I would ask that you let the starter know if you do not want to be entered for the knock out stages due to work, holidays etc. I suspect that this years championship will be one of the toughest as I've noticed lots of new members with good swings and good handicaps.
Lynne Moodie has put together a fantastic package for the club outing to Woll Golf Club this year. The date is Saturday 23rd July and the sheet is up on the noticeboard now. Again, numbers are limited so get your name down and leave your deposit at the front desk.
The next club newsletter is currently being created by Louise Scott so watch out for that in the coming weeks.
Hope to see you at the club soon.

Dear Member,
Now we are finally seeing some blue sky and perhaps looking for more regular
golf, I would like to highlight a couple of up and coming events at the
club.
• The first event is the Texas Scramble on Sunday 27th March and is
open to teams of three. Tee times from 0730 until 0930 and is a fun alternative
to the usual strokeplay competitions held monthly. Prizes will be awarded
for the best placed gents and ladies teams and there will also be some nearest
the pin prizes. The entry sheet is up on the noticeboard and spaces are
limited.
• The April Fool event on Sunday 3rd of April is open
to all members but restricted to 36 as it's a shotgun start at 8am. This
is the unique opportunity for you to play the back 9 holes backwards, which
I know sounds very strange but is actually great fun and worth seeing the
course from this unique viewpoint. The entry sheet is up on the noticeboard
now so don't delay.
After these events we are into the serious business of the club championship
qualifying medals. The committee have decided that the qualifying medals
will be played from the white tees this year although the knock-out stage
will again be played from the blue tees. This has come about as a result
of feedback from members and again we will review how this works at the
end of the season.
Finally can I wish all of you a successful golfing season and for those
of you who have recently joined Castle Park, a very warm welcome to you
and I hope to see you soon at the club.

Dear Member,
The Club AGM was held on the Tuesday 4th January 2011 and it
is with great pride that I accepted the post of Captain from Alan Herkes.

year to continue to share his knowledge, he has my thanks for all his hard
work over his two years.
The full list of the committee is shown below but I would like to welcome
Lynn Moodie into the post as Social Secretary and to Richard Thorburn who
has agreed to be my Vice Captain.
A copy of the AGM minutes will be posted in the clubhouse.

| Vice Captain | Ricky Thorburn |
| Lady Captain | Sheila Herschell |
| Lady Vice | Margaret Ross |

As I write this once again we have been hit with another snowfall and our
golf has been all too infrequent over the holiday period. I hope the big
melt starts again soon and we can all get out on the course and start swinging
again.
I look forward to the forthcoming year and hope you enjoy your golfing season.
Kind regards
Clark Black Captain

Will we be seeing Colin in the World Rally Championship in 2011?
The entry sheet for the Sweep
Competition on 02/01/2011 is on the clubhouse noticeboard.
Phone reception if you want your name added.
If you have got to here, then you will have noticed the website has had
a makeover.
The Members Area is not complete. I'll tidy
it up and bring info in it up to date as spare time permits basically!
The main priority was to revamp the more public side of the website, to highlight the Membership Price reduction and to provide more photos and feedback to potential new members and visitors.
If anyone wishes to provide photos of the course to be added to the Gallery, email them to me (if you have my email address), or pass them to me via reception. Cheers, TrevorF.
